The British society in general and the local community in Manchester in particular are known for the hospitality they show to the foreign friends amongst them, and this positive interaction between people of various cultural heritages enriches the experiences and lives of all parties involved.
There are 200 students from Taiwan in Manchester every year. Most of these students are on some one-year postgraduate taught courses and the experience of coming to Manchester can be both an exciting and a nervous experience.
In the past few years, various activities designed to facilitate the interaction and foster the friendship between the local community and the Taiwanese students have been organised and these have been very enjoyable for everyone.
We would like to invite you and your family and friends to come to the Anglo-Taiwan Gathering, the first of the series of such events for this year to be held on Friday 14 November at 7 00 pm at St. Peters House, contact details of which are shown above.
In this gathering, there will be some Taiwanese dishes. Some simple Taiwanese recipes will also be shared. It would certainly enhance the programme if you could also share with us some local customs or recipes. With the approach of several local holidays and the festive season, many students from Taiwan would be very interested to know how these days are celebrated here.
We would also like to invite you and your family and friends to several parties in the coming year celebrating the main Taiwanese festivals such as the Lunar New Year (including the Lantern’s Day), the Dragon Boat’s Day, and the Mid-Autumn’s Day (the Moon Festival). We will inform you of the details later. There will also be opportunities to arrange other activities such as invitations for Taiwanese students to visit local families to celebrate Christmas together. We will run the host scheme which is the local British family meet one or two Taiwanese student s build up the friendship and share their lives each other. Please let us know by Monday 10 November if you are able to join the host scheme or come and how many of you there will be so we can plan accordingly. Please tell all your friends and church members about this event. You can telephone Revd. Shou hui Chung at St Peter’s House, Manchester to book.
